The refugee crisis must not be seen as an event but as a manifestation of centuries of western colonial, imperialist and expansionist hegemony. The term migrants minimises the responsibility of western nations in terms of their International Law obligations. Refugees, in essence, are fleeing from brutal persecution by the authoritarian regimes, imposed upon them, in their homeland.
The tragic photograph of three year old Aylan Kurdi is a reflection of the deepening humanitarian crisis and desperation of civilians in seeking refuge in Europe. The escalating conflict zones in the Middle East and North Africa has created such a crisis last witnessed during World War 2.
There are dubious reasons for Syria to remain at war both internally and externally and all of these seek to serve ‘outside’ powers’.
Motivation to destabilise Syria is no different from the reasons for destroying Libya and Iraq. These reasons include: no International Monetary Fund (IMF) debt, massive oil and gas reserves and no genetically modified foods.
Notwithstanding the agenda of the new world order, the Assad regime in Damascus has committed unspeakable crimes against humanity.
The Al Imdaad Foundation is embarking on a collection drive to raise funds for the refugees. These funds are not confined to refugees from Syria only. Refugees from Libya, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Palestine and Eritrea amongst others will also benefit. Some 350 000 refugees have made the perilous journey to reach Europe since January 2015.
We the undersigned organisations appeal to all to contribute to this fund so that we may ease the suffering of these victims of man’s inhumanity to man. The crisis is a humanitarian one and our contributions must transcend all national, social, political, and religious considerations.
