A talented diplomat and the power of America’s Israel lobby

By Simon Barber

BusinessDay- 20/03/2009

ARE you now or have you ever been an Arabist? Is this the signature phrase of a post-Cold War McCarthyism that poisons Washington’s ability to deal rationally with the Middle East and sometimes makes it al-Qaeda’s best recruiter? The admirers of Charles Freeman certainly think so, though few who seek advancement in this town have what it takes to say so publicly.

Freeman, who is arguably one of the most talented US diplomatists of his generation, was to have come out of a busy retirement to be chairman of President Barack Obama’s National Intelligence Council (NIC). Last week, under bipartisan fire from Israel’s — or, more accurately, Likud’s — staunchest defenders in Congress, he stepped aside.

The White House failed to come to his aid, evoking this from the Washington Post’s David Broder, the down-the-middle doyen of America’s political commentators: “The Obama administration has just suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of the lobbyists the president vowed to keep in their place, and their friends on Capitol Hill. The country has lost an able public servant in an area where President Obama has few … credentials of his own, the handling of national intelligence.”

PRESS RELEASE

The Media Review Network is in possession of an e-mail written in English and Afrikaans and emanating from a senior employee of Mercedes Benz – SA. The e-Mail is accompanied by a series of horrendous photographs of the arm of a child being run over by a motor vehicle. The photographs are accompanied by Hebrew text.

The letter is derogatory to say the least and sends very erroneous and inflammatory signals about Islam and Muslims. It fuels 42and demonises the religion.

We have taken this matter up with Mercedes Benz – SA expressing our dismay and disgust. We have asked them to conduct an internal inquiry as soon as possible and that appropriate disciplinary measures be taken against the guilty party. Simultaneously we have requested that a fitting and proper apology be extended to the Muslim community of South Africa

Address by Ronnie Kasrils: “ISRAEL APARTHEID WEEK”

Gaza Prison

Mandela: ‘We South Africans cannot feel free until the Palestinians are free.’

At the onset of international “Israel Apartheid Week” in solidarity with the embattled Palestinian people, I want to start by quoting a South African who emphatically stated as far back as 1963 that “Israel is an apartheid state.” Those were not the words of Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Tutu or Joe Slovo, but were uttered by none other than the architect of apartheid itself, racist Prime Minister, Dr. Hendrik Verwoerd.

He was irked by the criticism of apartheid policy and Harold Macmillan’s “Winds of Change” speech , in contrast to the West’s unconditional support for Zionist Israel.
