Hezbollah Denounces Arrest Warrant againt Beshir

Hezbollah vehemently denounced on Thursday the International Criminal Court’s decision to issue an arrest warrant against Sudanese President Omar al-Beshir.

In a statement it released, Hezbollah warned that the timing of the warrant, after reconciliation and agreement on the Darfur crisis reached an advanced stage, constitutes "an obvious suspicious attempt to blow up the situation in the province and to threaten Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity through the promotion of separatism."

Why 10,000 Ugandans are eagerly serving in Iraq
Thousands of men and women from poverty-stricken Uganda risk their lives
for $600 a month

By Max Delany
The Christian Science Monitor

Kampala, Uganda – Under a relentless equatorial sun and the gaze of her
Zimbabwean instructor, Juliet Kituye quickly reassembles her AK-47. Next
to her, a young man in a ripped red T-shirt discharges imaginary rounds
at an invisible target.

On a disused soccer pitch in the suburbs of the Ugandan capital,
Kampala, 300 hopefuls are being put through rudimentary firearms
training. Many of the recruits are raw and their drills occasionally
lurch towards slapstick. One trainee lets the magazine slip out of his
automatic rifle and onto the red earth, someone else about turns right
instead of left. All of them share the same dream, however: going to
Iraq.

As President Barack Obama announces plans to withdraw US troops from
Iraq, thousands of young Ugandans are increasingly desperate to be sent
to the war-torn country. Already, the Ugandan government says there are
more than 10,000 men and women from this poverty-stricken East African
nation working as private security guards in Iraq. Hired out to
multibillion-dollar companies for hundreds of dollars a month, they risk
their lives seeking fortunes protecting US Army bases, airports, and oil
firms.

No headlines as epic journey to Gaza nears end

No Headlines As Epic Journey To Gaza Nears End

British convey enters Gaza, Monday, March 9. (Aljazeera)

By Sonja Karkar

An epic journey across eight countries is nearing its end. Gaza is almost within sights of the weary drivers and their navigators. On Day 21, the British convoy leaders decided to by-pass the towns of Benghazi and Bayda in Libya after consulting with Libyan officials to cut the time it would take to get to Gaza. This meant a desert crossing of some 400km – enduring not what many would think to be hot and stifling conditions, but rather the bitter cold of winter winds unbroken by vast expanses of emptiness. Perhaps few thought of what would await them on this journey when they first set out, but certainly, despite the hardships no one is complaining. What the Palestinians in Gaza are suffering is so much more and that is uppermost in everyone’s minds.

Nevertheless, poor and oftentimes non-existent phone signals, no landmarks, breakdowns, sandstorms and security restrictions are just some of the hiccups that have made the epic journey a writer’s dream story – after all, there are some 300 people sharing in the experience and each with their own story to tell. Under normal circumstances, it would be splashed across pages and TV screens in large headlines with a blow-by-blow account of various travellers’ tales. Not so on this voyage. The media is strangely silent, seemingly uninterested even in the historic opening of the border between Morocco and Algeria that has been closed since 1994.

SABC axes Miyeni

by  Candice Bailey

Controversial SAfm presenter Eric Miyeni has been booted from the airwaves for allegedly inciting xenophobia and using hate speech during one of his shows.

Miyeni was taken off air last week for discussing black-on-black violence and the role of refugees in their host countries in a show broadcast nearly five weeks ago.
