During a hectic spell around the beginning of 2009, I remember a message from trade unionist Bongani Masuku, in which he made a very profound observation. The gist of it was that the struggle against apartheid required its total eradication not seeking some form of adjustment with it that would result in “peace under apartheid”.

 

Masuku, who spearheaded a series of civil-society initiatives on behalf of South Africa’s powerful labour movement COSATU to express solidarity for the Palestinian cause, injected a unique form of dynamism to anti-Israeli activism.

 

His role remains as crucial and dynamic as before despite efforts by the pro-Israeli lobby to silence him. And herein lies the paradox confronting groups who purport to represent SA Jewry while the sum total of their domestic politics can be summed up as defenders of a foreign entity characterized by a strange mix of colonialism and apartheid.

 

The reality of intolerance as a cardinal tenet within the Zionist movement’s propaganda armoury has unfortunately become an unchallenged facet of life within sectors of government, media and commerce.

Countless United Nations Security Council and General Assembly resolutions have been passed and violated; The Goldstone Report has been attacked and dismissed and the recent UNHRC fact finding Mission on the Freedom Flotilla incident, condemning Israel’s actions in the strongest possible terms, has been rejected as biased by Israel and was hardly mentioned in the higher spheres of the UN. The reason most often given to explain this lack of political action being that ‘it will harm the peace process.’

We are made to believe that the Israel/Palestine conflict is a never ending one and that, when it comes to this issue, International Law is irrelevant.

But civil society knows better. This conflict is about International Law and nothing else. Not harming the peace process means not harming more than 17 years (from the Oslo agreement in 1993 until now) of settlement building, bombing, murder and assassination, Israeli army aggression, land grab, US vetoes, dispossessions and humiliation of the Palestinians living in the West Bank, Gaza and Israel.

Civil society also knows that under a facade of bland statements ‘condemning’ Israel’s actions, the EU, the USA and the whole international community are in fact actively complicit in those crimes.

That’s where the Russell Tribunal on Palestine (RToP) comes in.

Eid ul adhaa mubarak

The Media Review Network would like to extend sincere greetings to the Muslim Community on this auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Adha 1431. In celebrating this joyous day of Eid, we appeal to the community to remember Hazrat Ebrahim (A.S) & his family’s total submission to the will of Allah (S.W.T).

This period of Haj is a timely reminder to the Ummah of the sacrifice for the sake of truth & faith. Let this period be a cautious reminder to the Ummah that we should not fall for the trappings & temptations of this consumerist & materialistic world. We should not be oblivious to the needs of our less fortunate members of human society by allowing greed & avarice to overwhelm us.

Eid-ul-Adha also teachers us that we share a common humanity that should inspire us to work together as one people for the good of all mankind. We should let the values of love; truth & compassion influence our every day interactions with one another, irrespective of ethnic or religious origin.

We must remember countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Western Sahara, Darfur, Somalia, Kashmir, Afghanistan, Chechnya, Palestine & others, where people struggle to survive under the yoke of oppressive regimes. Powerful men & women of the world, because of their insatiable desires have become prisoners of their greed & manufactured wants. The less fortunate of humankind are being made to pay for this greed.

We should pray for peace, prosperity & the development of all mankind. We pray to Allah Almighty to guide us unto the chosen path & help us follow the true spirit of Islam. Aameen.

Press release mrn fact finding mission to sudan

The Media Review Network will be embarking on a fact finding mission to Sudan next week. Researcher Ibrahim Vawda will investigate conditions in Darfur as well as the situation regarding the forth coming referendum in southern Sudan and the oil rich area of Abbey.
