A foolish unconstitutional war

“The president does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation.”

So said constitutional scholar and Senator Barack Obama in December 2007 — the same man who, this weekend, ordered U.S. air and missile strikes on Libya without any authorization from Congress. Obama did win the support of Gabon in the Security Council, but failed with Germany. With a phone call to acquitted rapist Jacob Zuma, he got South Africa to sign on, but not Brazil, Russia, India or China. All four abstained. This is not the world’s war. This is Obama’s war.

The U.S. Navy fired almost all the cruise missiles that hit Libya as the U.S. Air Force attacked with B-2 bombers, F-15s and F-16s. “To be clear, this is a U.S.-led operation,” said Vice Adm. William Gortney.

“In wartime, truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies,” said Winston Churchill. Obama is a quick study. In his Friday ultimatum, he said, “We are not going to use force to go beyond a well-defined goal — specifically, the protection of civilians in Libya.” Why, then, did we strike Tripoli and Moammar Gadhafi’s compound?

Nuclear power private ownership the profit system

Nearly a fortnight after Japan’s north east coast was devastated by a massive earthquake and tsunami, the country and wider region remain under threat from the nuclear disaster in Fukushima. Radioactive contamination is leaking from at least one of the reactor cores, while the state of the highly toxic spent fuel rods stored in water pools remains unclear. Authorities have now warned the 13 million people of Tokyo not to allow their children to drink the irradiated water supply.

Damning information continues to emerge about the substandard design and operation of the Fukushima plant, the appalling safety record of its corporate operator, the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), and the negligent emergency response of the Japanese government.

What is revealed at every level are the destructive consequences of the profit system. In Japan, as internationally, the social needs of the population—including the need for a safe and environmentally sustainable energy system—are subordinated to the financial interests of the major corporations.

From the very first moments of the crisis at Fukushima, when the tsunami destroyed the nuclear facility’s backup power generators after sweeping over the inadequate coastal seawalls, considerations of corporate profit overrode those of public safety.

The Media Review Network and the Al Quds Foundation – SA, welcome Dr. Alan Hart, author, researcher and television correspondent, accompanied by Dr. Hajo Meyer, an Auschwitz Holocaust survivor, to the shores of South Africa.

Dr. Hart’s first book “Arafat, Terrorist or Peacemaker?” was published in 1984 and updated in subsequent editions. Volume 3 is now available.

Dr. Hajo Meyer is a Jew, born in Germany and a committed anti – Zionist. To escape the Nazi persecution he fled to Holland. He joined the underground to fight the Nazis. He was arrested by the Gestapo and sent to Auschwitz, from which he survived. Unfortunately, his parents did not. Press release congratulations university of johannesburg

In what is the first of its kind in our country, the University of Johannesburg (UJ), has taken a historical and momentous step, in its decision to support the call for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel.

In a ground breaking pronouncement, the UJ will be severing all relations, established under the apartheid regime, with the Ben – Gurion University (BGU) in Israel.

The Zionist entity of Israel is no stranger to boycotts. It has imposed cultural, academic, economic and political boycotts on the occupied territories. The boycott of Gaza must be the most brutal and naked siege on a group of human beings in the history of humankind.

BGU represents and embodies a country that lives and thrives on murder, theft and mendacity. It is sufficiently obvious that it cannot be an honest and a trusted partner in any relationship.

The Media Review Network (MRN) congratulates and supports this move by the UJ. The MRN also calls on all NGO’s and civil society structures in South Africa and our Government to identify with the position taken by UJ and to support the call for the BDS movement against Apartheid Israel.
