MJC meets Hamas in Damascus

A meeting on Sunday in Damascus with the leadership of Hamas by the president of the United Ulema Council of South Africa (Uucsa) and the president of the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) was as much on behalf of South African Muslims as it was on behalf of the wider South African society which has diligently supported the Palestinian course. So said MJC president, Maulana Igsaan Hendricks, a day after the meeting with Hamas leaders including Khaled Meshaal.

The South African delegation which includes Uucsa president Sheik Ebrahim Gabriels and MJC 2nd deputy president Sheik Igsaan Taliep travelled to Damascus for the meeting after the conclusion of an international conference in Beirut, Lebanon last week under the auspices of the Al Quds Foundation, which looked at internatioanl assistance in the reconstruction of Gaza after the 23 day war which ended in January.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton grabbed headlines with an invitation to Iran to attend a conference on Afghanistan, but the significant Middle Eastern news last week came from Britain. It has “reconsidered” its position on Hezbollah and will open a direct channel to the militant group in Lebanon.

Britain aligned itself with the U.S. position on Hezbollah, but has now seen its error. Bill Marston, a Foreign Office spokesman, told Al Jazeera: “Hezbollah is a political phenomenon and part and parcel of the national fabric in Lebanon. We have to admit this.”

THE government has offered several reasons for refusing the Dalai Lama a visa to attend a peace conference scheduled for this weekend.

The spokesperson for the department of foreign affairs, Ronnie Mamoepa, told City Press that “the organisers worked with the government on this conference and no invitation was sent to him” even as the organisers confirmed that invitations signed by South Africa’s three Nobel Peace Prize laureates – Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela and FW de Klerk – had been sent and accepted.

Employees suspended over anti-Islamic e-mail

A Leading motor vehicle manufacturer has suspended two employees — one of them a senior staff member — for allegedly disseminating an anti-Islamic e-mail.

Mercedes-Benz South Africa this week suspended tax manager Frank Booyzen and another employee, after receiving complaints from Muslim watchdog body the Media Review Network (MRN).
