The "peaceful" take-over of the Rachel Corrie ship which was en-route to Gaza to deliver much needed aid was nothing more than a publicity stunt by the Israeli government. This was the view of Greta Berlin from the Free Gaza Movement, who spoke to VOC News on Saturday from Cyprus, shortly after news broke that the Israeli military had taken command of the ship.

The Rachel Corrie was seized five days after Israeli commando’s raided the freedom flotilla during the early hours of Monday morning. During this raid nine people were killed and 20 people were injured.  "They are going to turn this into a big photo opportunity for them because it has been a huge public relations disaster for them.

Fraud violence mass abstention election debacle in Afghanistan

Saturday’s parliamentary election in Afghanistan was a predictable debacle, characterized by widespread fraud and violence, and largely boycotted by the Afghan population. Officials of the US-dominated government of President Hamid Karzai said 3.6 million people cast ballots, far below the 6 million ballots claimed for last year’s presidential election, which was rigged to ensure Karzai’s reelection.

The 3.6 million ballots represents barely 31 percent of the 11.4 million registered voters, but the Karzai government tried to boost that figure to 40 percent, arguing that the 2.2 million people registered in areas where voting could not be conducted because of security concerns should be excluded from the total of registered voters.

The Independent Election Commission (IEC) has previously said that 16.7 million people have been registered to vote since 2003, which would make the turnout only 21 percent. Whatever number is chosen, however, there is no dispute that the turnout was low, except in certain neighborhoods in Kabul, the capital city, under tight control by US and NATO forces.

Afghan Defense Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak effectively conceded that the political influence of the Taliban was growing, telling the press, in explanation of the low turnout, “One possibility is that the propaganda of the enemy affected the psyche of the people.”

Press release Isaraeli effort to retain mubarak deplored

  • by

Media Review Network is appalled that Israel is lobbying behind-the-scenes to undermine Egypt’s mass-based revolution.

A report in Haa’retz reveals that Israel is lobbying frantically to prevent the toppling of Hosni Mubarak, thus directly interfering with a core demand of the protesters. This attempt by the Netanyahu regime is deplorable and we therefore condemn it unreservedly.

Anti-Mubarak protesters aspire for a free, independent democratic Egypt. Many of their spokespersons, including former IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei have correctly argued against “cosmetic reforms” under the current dictatorship and demand that Mubarak has to go!

Revelations now about Israeli anxiety and underhand tactics to persuade the European Union, America and other countries to hang onto Mubarak is viewed by us as an affront against the masses of Egyptians.

We call on these countries and South Africa to adopt a clear, unambiguous position in line with the legitimate aspirations of the people. We also call on them to dismiss Israel’s despicable lobbying to retain Mubarak’s reign of terror. Egypt’s three decades of dictatorship and notorious emergency laws whereby fundamental liberties have been severely compromised, cannot be tolerated any longer.
