There cannot be any dispute that Israel’s image has been severely battered

The Gaza aid flotilla has come to symbolize a breathtaking type of creative resistance. Ingenious, challenging and as Israel has learnt much to its folly, devastating!

Clearly the Mavi Marmara has changed the Zionist worldview of a tiny Jewish state besieged by hostile terrorists forever. No longer is Israel able to lean on deceptive arguments of the past to justify its policies of repression and vengeful occupation. That and the latest full-blown standoff between the family of captured IDF soldier Gilad Shalit, their thousands of supporters and the rightwing Netanyahu regime, is additional evidence of a public mood displaying signs of frustration, hopelessness and despair.

Ties with the Obama administration, despite desperate public attempts seeking to reassure each other that these are solid, are clearly showing signs of deep-seated divisions. Blowing hot and cold with no decisive urgency to restore ties to the Bush era, the current US government is evidently showing signs of fatigue even as having its role downgraded embarrasses it.

It not surprising therefore to read that the Chief of the Mossad told the Knesset as recently as June 2010: “For the US, we have ceased to be an asset and become a burden.”

Bill clinton claims russian immigrants obstacle to peace

Netanyahu expresses regret over comments made in ‘Foreign Policy’ report; Yisrael Beitenu, Natan Sharansky heavily criticize claims.

Russian immigrants in Israel could be one of the main obstacles to achieving peace with the Palestinians, Bill Clinton told reporters in New York on Tuesday, according to Foreign Policy magazine.

The former US president reportedly said that children of immigrants who serve in the IDF have difficulties imagining any division of land that may in the future be part of a peace agreement. Clinton highlighted that the large numbers of Russian immigrants and settlers serving in the IDF could make it difficult for the army to confront settlers if this was required and feared this could cause problems in the future, according to the report. The people who are most opposed to dividing the land are the settlers and the Russians, the former president noted, and an increasing number of people serving in the army are children of these groups.

The delusions of the peace process

“Underneath these dark clouds of deception and delusion, the peoples of Occupied Palestine, as well as the several million refugees, endure their harsh daily existence while the world watches and waits, seemingly helpless.”

It is astonishing that despite the huge gaps between the maximum that Israel is willing to concede and the minimum that the Palestine Authority could accept as the basis of a final settlement of the conflict, governmental leaders, especially in Washington, continue to pull every available string to restart inter-governmental negotiations.

Is it not enough of a signal that Israel lacks the capacity or will to agree to an extension of the partial settlement freeze for a mere additional 90 days, despite the outrageous inducements from the Obama Administration (20 F-35 fighter jets useful for an attack on Iran; an unprecedented advance promise to veto any initiative in the Security Council acknowledging a Palestinian state; and the assurance that Israel would never again be asked to accept a settlement moratorium) that were offered to suspend partially their unlawful settlement activity.

In effect, a habitual armed robber was being asked to stop robbing a few banks for three months in exchange for a huge financial pay off. Such an arrangement qualifies as a transparently shameless embrace of Israeli lawlessness on behalf of a peace process that has no prospect of producing peace, much less justice. Justice here is conceived in relation to the satisfaction of Palestinian rights, especially the right of self–determination that has through the years been whittled down.
