Press release

“Russell Tribunal on Palestine”

Thursday, 21 July 2011

The Media Review Network (MRN) is pleased to lend its full backing for the 3rd International Session of a “People’s Court” to be held in Cape Town during November 2011.

Known as the “Russell Tribunal on Palestine”, it seeks to provide civil society and leading academics, jurists and human rights activists a public platform to subject Israel’s treatment of Palestinians to intense legal scrutiny.

In welcoming this Tribunal to our shores, we also acknowledge the role of key personalities who we believe will enhance and dignify it, thus providing it with the required credibility. These respected persons are Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Ronnie Kasrils, Professor John Dugard, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Judge Siraj Desai – amongst others!

Given Israeli intransigence and continuous defiance of international laws, we are confident that the Russell Tribunal will apportion blame without fear or favour!

The Tribunal will also lead evidence on Israel’s human rights abuses and its apartheid character, both constituting crimes against humanity.

The MRN is privileged to be associated with the Russell Tribunal and calls on government and media institutions to play a collaborative role in ensuring its success.
