The Media Review Network (MRN) condemns the excessive use of force against students at the University of Witwatersrand and the other campuses nationwide. The use of stun grenades and rubber bullets on unarmed protesting students at close range is deplorable, disgraceful and unbecoming of our law enforcement agencies.
The injuries sustained by students and their leaders, must raise questions about the Government’s lack of commitment to the legitimate demands of the students. The governments glaring absence and muted response regarding an effective plan to implement free decolonised quality higher education only deepens this ever worsening crises.
State violence and disproportionate force by security forces has been the hallmarks of oppression and tyranny. Conduct of this nature fails to be in keeping with the ideals of our democracy and is reminiscent of colonial cruelty and subjugation.
The Media Review Network calls on Government to heed the calls of the student movement and to take all reasonable steps necessary to cross this impasse. Simultaneously we urge students and their leaders to guard their noble cause against actions which could undermine same.
