Similar to the End Conscription Campaign in apartheid South Africa, these conscientious objectors have joined a growing chorus of young Israeli’s who are speaking out and refusing to enlist in an army that enforces de facto apartheid, colonisation of Palestinian lands, genocide and ethnic cleansing.
“We have decided not to take part in the occupation and oppression of the Palestinian people… the army is carrying out the government’s racist policy, which violates basic human rights and executes one law for Israeli’s and another law for Palestinians in the same territory” these courageous young high school students wrote in a statement addressed to Benjamin Netanyahu.
The Media Review Network applauds this fearless action and calls upon South Africa and other civilised nations of this world to pile on the pressure on apartheid Israel to ensure that the last bastion of apartheid is resigned to the dustbin of history.
These teenagers no doubt had in mind the plight of thousands of Palestinian children who suffer daily under the brutal Zionist occupation.
Most recently, Palestinian teenagers Ahed Tamimi and her cousin Nour have been incarcerated in an Israeli prison (against international law) for resisting the daily brutalities of the Zionist army who encroach upon every conceivable aspect of their lives.
Having visited South Africa recently, the public is acutely aware of the struggles faced by Palestinian teenagers. Even a simple walk to school becomes a revolutionary act for Ahed Tamimi and countless others.
Ahed is now held without charge, but continues to exude the bravery demonstrated by Hector Peterson and others in the height of apartheid resistance in South Africa.
The action of the Israeli objectors must not be left to fizzle out in isolation. As such, the Media Review Network calls upon the South African government to provide practical expression to the recent African National Congress (ANC) resolution to downgrade our embassy in Israel to a mere liaison office until it abandons its policy of Zionist apartheid.
