The Johannesburg Council for the Disabled (JOCOD) a protective workshop, which serves the holistic needs of adults living with disabilities.
Gaza, 4 July 2024 – The recent tragic, inhumane and horrific death of Muhammed Bahar, a 24-year-old man with Down’s syndrome, has deeply shocked and has left a profound impact on the JOCOD community. People living with disabilities are among the most vulnerable members of society. This incident reflects a gross violation of human rights and highlights the urgent need for greater awareness, compassion, and justice for individuals living with disabilities.
The tragic story of Muhammed Bahar, a vulnerable individual with the mental capacity of a one-year-old, was brutally attacked by dogs and then abandoned to die of starvation by the Zionist army. His family, forced at gunpoint to leave him behind, made relentless efforts to secure his release and medical treatment through the Red Cross. However, their pleas were met with non-cooperation from the Zionist army.
During this time Muhammed’s family endured unimaginable anguish, hoping for his safe return. Instead, they found his decomposed body upon their return home after the Zionist troops withdrew from Shujaiya. Muhammed’s death, alone, hungry, scared, confused, and injured, is a stark reminder of the atrocities faced by those living with disabilities in conflict zones.
The lack of compassion and humanity shown by the authorities in this case is deeply disturbing and highlights the urgent need for respect for human rights and dignity in all circumstances. Muhammed’s harrowing ordeal and lonely death must not be forgotten, as it underscores the importance of upholding the value of every human life, regardless of the circumstances
We extend our deepest condolences to Muhammed Bahar’s family and stand in solidarity with all those affected by this tragedy. JOCOD calls on international human rights organizations and governing bodies to investigate this incident thoroughly and hold those responsible accountable. This tragedy underscores the urgent need for global awareness and action to prevent such atrocities from recuring.
This press release aims to honour Muhammed Bahar’s memory and ensure that his story is never forgotten. We must all work together to create a world where the most vulnerable among us are protected and treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.
