The Media Review Network (MRN) vehemently condemns the ongoing imprisonment of political prisoners and prisoners of conscience in Egypt and across the Middle East. These individuals, many of whom are detained without due process, have been targeted for their political beliefs, peaceful activism, or dissent against oppressive regimes. We urgently call for their immediate release and demand accountability for those responsible for grave human rights violations, particularly the tragic Rab’aa massacre of 2013.
The Rab’aa massacre, a dark chapter in modern Egyptian history, witnessed the brutal killing of over 800 peaceful demonstrators in Cairo who were protesting the military coup that ousted Egypt’s first democratically elected president. To date, the perpetrators of this atrocity remain unpunished, while survivors and families of victims are left without justice. Instead of addressing the massacre, the Egyptian government has escalated its repression by silencing dissent through mass arrests, enforced disappearances, and systemic abuse of prisoners.
The Media Review Network asserts that the ongoing detention of political prisoners is a direct violation of international human rights standards, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Egypt is a signatory. Thousands of prisoners, including journalists, academics, activists, and opposition figures, languish in overcrowded and inhumane conditions, often subjected to torture and ill-treatment.
This repression is not confined to Egypt but extends across the Middle East, where authoritarian regimes weaponize the judicial system to suppress voices of dissent. Such actions undermine peace, stability, and the principles of democracy in the region.
We call on the international community, human rights organizations, and all people of conscience to:
- Demand the Immediate Release of Political Prisoners: Pressure the Egyptian government to release all political prisoners and prisoners of conscience unconditionally.
- Ensure Justice for the Rab’aa Massacre: Advocate for an independent international investigation into the Rab’aa massacre and bring those responsible to justice.
- Hold Repressive Governments Accountable: Condemn the systematic persecution of dissidents across the Middle East and work to end the culture of impunity.
The Media Review Network stands in solidarity with all those who have been wrongfully detained for speaking truth to power. The pursuit of justice, freedom, and human dignity cannot be silenced. We remain steadfast in our commitment to exposing injustices and amplifying the voices of the oppressed.
