The poet talks to himself about Zubeidi A-Poem

by Hassen Lorgat

They were forced to release//from Israeli torture chambers/
/Comrade Zakaria Zubeidi
And 110 others including children/

Comrade Zubeidi has been released
Zubeidi? Yes, you know him
The founder of Freedom Theatre and later Theatre of Stone
Now called upon to act on life’s epic of Palestinian justice
And played a lead in the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade
And the second intifada

In and out of prison
This young boy from Jenin
Became a man
in prison

Did you say prison?
Zubeidi imprisoned his cell
The prison could not never hold him

The world remembers Zakaria Zubeidi
And five of his comrades

yes…I remember, the poet is humbled
We all ululated that moment
How the noble spoon
Ate away hate away the soil and concrete
at the Gilboa maximum security prison

Comrade Zubeida and others will at last taste freedom
the fragrance of liberty fills the air
whilst grumpy prison authorities
demand the joy be locked inside
not to offend their jailers

(i pray they do not kill our hero)
But today we laugh and lick our wounds
And continue to demand a world without jails
And pray that Comrade Zubeida will tomorrow
Use the innocent spoon for the family breakfast
