NELSON MANDELA KASHMIR–AFRICA–PEACE SEMINAR CALLS FOR GLOBAL ACTION ON HUMAN RIGHTS IN KASHMIR

The Kashmir Global Movement (KGM), in partnership with African human rights advocates, convened the Nelson Mandela Kashmir–Africa–Peace Seminar in Johannesburg on Friday, 24 October 2025. The event united civil society leaders, scholars, diplomats and peace activists from across Africa and the global South in solidarity with the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Delegates adopted a Resolution on Kashmir, reaffirming the universal principles of freedom, dignity, and justice as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the South African Bill of Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

The resolution highlighted the continuing human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir, including restrictions on freedom of movement, association, religion, and expression, as well as arbitrary detentions, extra-judicial killings, enforced disappearances, mass rapes, and torture. These acts were strongly condemned as grave breaches of international law and human decency.

The seminar urged the Government of South Africa, the African Union, the United Nations Human Rights Council, and the G20 leaders to take corrective measures and hold the Government of India accountable to its international obligations.

Delegates further called upon India to respect, protect, and fulfil the rights of the Kashmiri people, and to implement the United Nations Security Council Resolution 47 (1948) by setting a date for a free and fair referendum, allowing the people of Jammu and Kashmir to determine their own political future without foreign occupation or interference.

“The spirit of Nelson Mandela teaches us that freedom anywhere is incomplete until freedom is achieved everywhere,” said Salman Khan, Chairperson of KGM. “Today, Africa’s moral voice joins the global call for the freedom of Kashmir.”
