They Fear Kites, Don’t They? A-poem

By Hassen Lorgat

1

They fear kites, don’t they?
They fear kites. They do.

2

Israel’s Katz is in a mess.
The cage in his head
cannot fathom how those starved and denied the basics can choose joy.

3

The Israeli Monster of Defence, Israel Katz, wonders how—
after homes, schools, and places of worship and healing were smashed,
whilst the birds flew to safety,
as resilient dogs and dispersed cats roamed,
and the bodies continue to rot under the rubble—

4

Now he begs the international community
to tell the children to stop their pleasures.
For if they do not stop, the killing of the kiteflyers will continue.

5

Katz and his boss have learnt well.
Did Golda Meir not say,
“We can forgive the Arabs for killing our children,
but we can never forgive them
for forcing us to negotiate or kill their children”?

6

Undeterred, the children still look to the heavens,
heads held high, sending messages to those above.

7

NOW HE HAS TO DEAL WITH THE JOYOUS KITES AND BALLOONS.

8

The kite is mightier than the F-16.

9

Where the child sees a kite,
or a balloon,
the men of war
see the untamed kite
flying high above… a threat.

10

Even the settlers from Kibbutz Nahal Oz got the message of the kites,
some 800m (2,620ft) from the Gaza border…
unsmiling.

11

Their fear of freedom
blinds them from seeing beyond the fence.

12

Last Sunday, the official assassins
killed the four-year-old toddler, Mohammad Taha,
who earlier enjoyed the flights of fancy.
Now he looks down upon those manufacturers of death and misery
who look away.

13

A happy child in Gaza remains their living conscience.

14

For the children,
the kites and balloons fly them out of the concentration camp
to join the stars, the moon, and planets in freedom’s skies.

15

But for the NetanKatz,
they are drones with bombs.
…dreams of freedom are not to be entertained.

16

Now, the lungs of joy and laughter overcome the smell of death.

17

The home-made kite, born from this and that,
now a simple toy,
puts the fear of God’s people
and remains
mightier than the most immoral army in the world.

18

Come, comrades, come join us.
Let us rally for a new universal declaration of the rights of the joyful child:
the right to fly kites without being killed.

19

But alas, the US and their lapdog allies will veto
the right to happiness as well.

20

For sure, we all know the killing machine
cannot kill the kite’s kindred message.
So they kill the kiteflyer—
the children who hold their hands aloft.

21

We cannot stand aside as the winds of change beckon.

22

Why? We have no choice but to keep watch on the killers,
who kill kindness
in the kinders with kites.

23

Israel Katz kills kites.
