Deeply saddened by the news of the passing of a dear friend Bilal Motsau.
Our comradeship goes back to the events leading up to the historic milestone of June 1976 in Soweto and the blessed moment Bilal embraced Islam.
Over the years, his journey was defined by the strategic role he undertook in the development of the Muslim Youth Movement (MYM) as a close confidant of late Dr Shaukat Thokan, late Fareed Choonara and many others including Imthiaz Jhetham.
He also made a huge impact across many platforms such as The Voice Radio where he served alongside late Omaruddin Don Mattera and late Shamima Shaikh through the establishment of the Muslim Community Broadcasting Trust (MCBT).
He played a critical role in social-activism during the era of struggle against apartheid, not only in advancing dawah but also to strengthen communities via his unique vision.
Bilal was highly respected for his knowledge and the wisdom he imparted in the most dignified manner.
One of his most profound contributions was to challenge
the prevailing notion during apartheid that Islam was strictly an “Indian” or “Malay” religion.
Many, who with Bilal had the privilege to travel the arduous journey of life and the enormous challenges he had to overcome, will be able to recall his spirited, yet dignified personality.
As a friend and ally of Media Review Network (MRN), Bilal’s enthusiastic support will forever be valued.
Indeed, a noble baobab tree has fallen as aptly described by Malik Arafat .
He reminds us too that Bilal was well known for his humble and pleasant nature.
“Never the one to sell his knowledge. He was a liked and respected martial artist, a gentle giant”, wrote Arafat.
