Rabbi no spokesman

In his handling of the matter of Richard Goldstone’s attendance at his grandson’s bar mitzvah, Rabbi Warren Goldstein has demonstrated a callow lack of wisdom (Judge welcome in shul despite report, April 21).

The rabbi pours fuel on the fire he pretends to be dousing by reminding his congregants that he believes the judge perpetrated a grave injustice against Israel. He also tells us self- righteously that synagogues are open to all, but in the same breath informs us he and the leaders of the synagogue “took a decision” that the shul’s door would be open to the entire Goldstone family, as if they had the power to shut it.

By his own argument, this is not the rabbi’s decision to make. Thus, while appearing to welcome Judge Goldstone into the house of God, the rabbi effectively shuts him out.

The hypocrisy is breathtaking, and in its shadow, it is worth remembering that Rabbi Goldstein is neither the elected representative of, nor the spokesman for, South African Jews. He does not represent Judge Richard Goldstone and he most certainly does not represent me.

Sachs backs goldstone against zionists

(source: Independent Newspapers + SAPA)

Retired  judge Albie Sachs has joined the defence of Judge Richard Goldstone after he was banned from his grandson’s barmitzvah at the behest of Zionists opposed to his UN report fingering Israel – and Hamas – for war crimes.

"Jews are telling other Jews how to conduct themselves. Why should someone be made to choose between being a Jew and having a conscience?" he said yesterday at a Cape Town Press Club lunch.

Sachs, who retired from the Constitutional Court in October, said the first time he heard about Goldstone’s banning was in a Sea Point deli. "A customer who I hardly knew rounded on me and asked aggressively: ‘Are you for or against Richard Goldstone?’ I was astonished by his abruptness, but not surprised." Sachs could reply only that Goldstone was his friend.

An act of war

Statement of Congressman Ron Paul – United States House of Representatives

Statement on Motion to Instruct Conferees on HR 2194, Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability and Divestment Act – April 22, 2010

"United States House of Representatives"

I rise in opposition to this motion to instruct House conferees on HR 2194, the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability and Divestment Act, and I rise in strong opposition again to the underlying bill and to its Senate version as well. I object to this entire push for war on Iran, however it is disguised. Listening to the debate on the Floor on this motion and the underlying bill it feels as if we are back in 2002 all over again: the same falsehoods and distortions used to push the United States into a disastrous and unnecessary one trillion dollar war on Iraq are being trotted out again to lead us to what will likely be an even more disastrous and costly war on Iran. The parallels are astonishing.

Jewish policing in sa overstepped

It is gratifying to see the chief rabbi, the South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD), and the South African Zionist Federation (SAZF) come into such domestic and international disrepute. Newspapers here and abroad are covering the scandal of Justice Richard Goldstone’s effective exclusion from his grandson’s bar mitzvah and aghast editorials are springing up in the four corners of the world.

And the latest round of hasty explanations only shows they are justified: the Jewish so-called “leadership” (unelected) in SA abandoned its spiritual responsibilities so long ago that, facing this opprobrium but in fact fully endorsing a cruel and heartless attack on one of the community’s most eminent and principled members, the chief rabbi can now only offer flimsy rhetoric about “open shuls” that convinces no one (Judge welcome in shul despite report, April 21).
