Deputy Minister of International Relations and Co-operation of the Republic of South Africa Ebrahim Ismail Ebrahim used the occasion of the 2010 Budget Vote in the National Assembly (22nd April 2010) to reiterate the South African position in relation to the current state of Israeli – Palestinian affairs.

He took the opportunity to salute Judge Richard Goldstone, a fellow South African countryman, and his team and praised them for having "exposed the calculated and well orchestrated violations of international humanitarian law in Gaza." In addition to emphasising South African support for the implementation of the Goldstone Report’s recommendations, he also stated that the current South African administration would exert efforts to see a "just peace" for Palestinians which should include a total freeze on Israeli settlement building; the end of the blockade on Gaza; the right of return for Palestinian refugees; East Jerusalem as the capital for Palestinians; and the right for Palestinians to control their own natural resources.

The lecture, on the situation in the Middle East, which was originally supposed to take place months ago, was delayed because of early security concerns at the university – but went ahead Wednesday after university officials promised Ambassador Ron Prosor that his deputy’s security would be guaranteed.

Frankie Boyle: refuses to apologies for anti-Israel joke

Comedian Frankie Boyle has described Israel as an “aggressive, terrorist” and “apartheid” state during an attack on the BBC’s decision to apologise for a joke he made about Jews.

The Scottish comedian, who has appeared on Mock the Week and Have I Got News for You, made the comments in an open letter responding to the BBC Trust editorial standards committee’s apology earlier this week.Mr Boyle made the original remarks on Radio 4’s Political Animal in June 2008 and said: “I’m quite interested in the Middle East, I’m actually studying that Israeli army martial arts. And I know 16 ways to kick a Palestinian woman in the back.

“I’ve got an analogy which explains the whole thing quite well: if you imagine that Palestine is a cake – well, that cake is being punched to pieces by a very angry Jew.”
