One silence, of all the shameful silences, has thus far roared especially loud – the silence of the jurists. The 41,000 attorneys in the State of Israel are entrusted with protecting its image as a lawful state, and this large and grand army has once again strayed from its function. There is a deep suspicion throughout the world that Israel carried out a series of war crimes, and the jurists of our country are holding their peace.
 
Where, for instance, is Aharon Barak when we really need him? Where are his colleagues, the former justices of the Supreme Court, who knew very well how to raise their voices when Justice Minister Daniel Friedmann threatened to harm the apple of their eye, and who now hide in their cowardly silence?

Gaza – Ma’an/Agencies – De facto Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh met with Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams in Gaza on Wednesday evening.

The Irish leader is in the region to promote peace negotiations among all the parties to the conflict, including, implicitly, Hamas. Adams himself is the leader of a previously-stigmatized party that has now made peace with the UK and is part of a power-sharing government in Northern Ireland.

Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez said the Gitmo detainees are "human beings".

President Hugo Chavez has expressed Venezuela’s readiness to accept prisoners held at the Guantanamo bay detention center in Cuba.

The Venezuelan leader said on Wednesday that Caracas "would have no problems in receiving" the detainees — whom the US calls terror suspects — from the notorious US prison.
