After Israel’s devastating attack on Gaza last winter, the UN-commissioned Goldstone fact-finding team and subsequent report accused both Israel and Hamas of committing war crimes and possible crimes against humanity. Released in September 2009, the Goldstone report recommended that both parties conduct impartial, independent investigations into these accusations within six months, failing which, the matter would be referred to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

While both parties to the conflict were cited for possible war crimes, the Goldstone report reserved the majority of its condemnation for Israel because of the vast difference in casualties on the two sides — more than 1,400 Palestinians were killed, and 13 Israelis. Four Israeli civilians were killed by rocket fire from Gaza, while more than 900 unarmed Palestinian civilians, including some 320 children, were massacred in Gaza.

Scandal in goa as Isaraeli drug dealer boasts of police corruption on youtube

  • by

By Rhys Blakely,Mumbai

(source: Times UK Online)

The story has all the elements of an airport potboiler: a tropical beach setting; a heavily tattooed Israeli drugs dealer; a handful of corrupt detectives; and a Swedish model-cum-Bollywood dancer who goes by the name of “Lucky”.

When Yaniv Banaim, an Israeli drugs dealer working in the western Indian state of Goa, boasted to a pneumatic Swedish blonde of how he regularly received large amounts of cannabis and ecstasy from the Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) of the local police force, he did not suspect that he was being filmed. He certainly did not expect the woman in question — Lucky Nova Mangarda Amori — to post the incriminating footage on YouTube.

The confession — which contained a detailed explanation of how drugs confiscated by the ANC are allegedly sold back to dealers in Goa — has sparked a corruption scandal that threatens to expose several senior police chiefs. For now, six ANC officers have been suspended while corruption and drugs charges are investigated.

Burning Of the Quraan Not an Isolated Event

By Anver Suliman – Executive Member, Media Review Network

The Media Review Network takes note that although various Governments and high profile politicians have voiced their opposition to the proposed burning of the Holy Quraan by Pastor Terry Jones, we find the hypocrisy of their utterances more disturbing than Terry Jones’s intentions.

During the various invasions of Muslim countries, Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine and Beirut, by Israel, America and the NATO countries, Mosques and Muslim homes have been deliberately targeted and bombed. Every mosque and home would have had copies of the Holy Quraan. It has been widely reported that American forces were found desecrating the Holy Quraan during their attack on Iraq. Now to distance themselves from Terry Jones is a pretence and insincerity of the highest order.

It is disillusioning to think that Jones is acting on his own. The banning of Minarets in Sweden, scarves and burkas in France and Belgium and the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) in Denmark as well as the prohibition of charitable funds to Palestine are an indication of the deep and intense hate for Muslims by some western governments.  These are coordinated efforts of governments to demonise Islam and to fuel the flames of Islamophobia.

The Media Review Network calls on all Muslims to practise restraint and in the spirit of the Holy Month of Ramadaan, to exercise tolerance, and patience.

“And to be firm and patient, in pain and adversity and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of Truth, the God fearing.” (2:177)

Cheap media and government insults fail to deter increasing numbers converting to Islam

A recent report conducted by the University of Swansea and commissioned by the Faith Matters Forum, has produced unprecedented statistics regarding the rates of conversions to Islam amongst Britons since 2008. The study which has been widely discussed by certain quarters of the media including articles in both tabloid and broadsheet papers and radio shows, has sought to understand the reasons surrounding the phenomena of British women in particular, especially white women, who have embraced Islam. While the report looks at many factors it has unequivocally exploded many common myths surrounding female converts to Islam.

These include statistics showing that 62% of women as opposed to 38% of men have converted, that their was no evidence that conversions had to do with marrying a Muslim man as was previously the common explanation offered as to why women would wish to convert, and that the vast majority changed their appearance after converting by wearing the hijab. And also converts believed that they should be a force for good by building bridges between the Muslim and Non Muslim communities in order to understand Islam better.
