Press release

Prisoner Exchange

Tuesday, 18 October 2011

In what has been described as a historic moment, the exchange of Apartheid Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit for over a thousand Palestinians, the Media Review Network (MRN) congratulates Hamas for its patience and steadfastness in the struggle for liberation.

It is unfortunate that the media reflects its bias by focusing almost entirely on the captured Israeli soldier, ignoring the horrendous plight of the thousands of Palestinian prisoners, some who spent over 20 years in jail. During the South African Apartheid years, blacks experienced the same discrimination where only Whites were given compassionate coverage.

It vindicates Hamas’s view that any and all resistance options to oppression must be employed against the brutal Zionist occupation of their lands. Negotiations for the past 20 years have yielded no benefits, and Israel has continued to illegally devour more land and ethnically cleanse Palestinians with impunity and in violation of International Law.

The MRN urges all governments and civil society to pressurize the vicious Israeli regime to free the remaining Palestinian prisoners. It is clear that only when punished, will Israel abide by International Law. The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign must be implemented against Apartheid Israel to bring about justice and peace in the region.
