South African journalist Mark Klusener has been placed under house arrest in Jerusalem after he and seven other journalists were arrested when police raided a South African-backed radio station. Klusener, who works for Eyewitness News, was released yesterday after spending a night in a cell in a local police station.Klusener has worked for Talk Radio 702 and e.tv.Rafique Gangat, a morning show host at RAM FM, the radio station whose satellite office was raided on Monday, said: “They were released on bail and have now been placed under house arrest for seven days.”According to Gangat, the eight journalists have been instructed not to talk to the media or each other. The Ministry of Communications shut RAM FM’s Jerusalem studio on Monday, saying it did not have a licence to broadcast. RAM FM has denied it was breaking the law. Police, with Israeli Communications Ministry officials, swooped on the stations studios, arresting everyone in the offices and confiscating broadcasting equipment. “We will fight this in the courts. We are perfectly legal, there are no issues here,” Gangat said.
