Though I’m not surprised by the harshness of Zev Krengel’s attack on Zane Dangor in regard to the downgrade of South Africa’s embassy in Tel Aviv, I note that his desperate attempt to do so is filled with frustration.

Unfortunately for him and the SA Jewish Board, their failure to address the reasons why South Africa had to implement steps to reduce its embassy to a mere liaison office without a serving ambassador, is tantamount to saying that they don’t care about how Israel subjects Palestinians to the worst forms of state terrorism.

In addition to the atrocities committed, Israel’s military occupation and dehumanizing policies cannot proceed without censure from civil rights groups and governments. In this regard, we have to acknowledge South Africa’s decision to downgrade as necessary and in line with the country’s obligations to international conventions.

Though Krengel disparagingly insults Jewish Voice for Peace as a “fringe group”, we acknowledge its courageous stance in defense of Palestinian human rights – a position the Jewish Board has failed to uphold despite a 117 year history.

Now that Israel’s apartheid status has been formally confirmed by none other than Netanyahu, one wonders whether the Jewish Board will have the courage to abandon its misguided efforts to whitewash Israel’s racist policies.

Will Krengel dare to apply the duck test to Israel’s colonialism whereby Golan Heights and Jerusalem have been colonised in violation of UN resolutions?
