Media Review Network Condemns Government’s Defense of Arms Exports to US

The Media Review Network (MRN) expresses its profound disappointment at the South African government’s decision to defend arms export permits to the United States, as it prepares to oppose the Southern Africa Litigation Centre’s (SALC) court application.

We stand firmly in support of SALC’s legal challenge.

As clearly outlined in their application, the US has engaged in a clear pattern of conduct that breaches international law, triggering the National Conventional Arms Control Committee’s (NCACC) mandatory statutory duty to act. The US actions detailed, from lifting arms embargoes on Israel amidst ongoing genocide in Gaza, to aggressive attacks on Iran and the unlawful capture of Venezuela’s head of state, represent egregious violations of the rules-based international order.

These are not isolated incidents but a consistent pattern of aggression.

The ongoing war on Iran since February 2026 has been rightly described as a serious threat to regional and global peace.

By facilitating arms transfers to a state that so flagrantly disregards international law, South Africa risks becoming complicit in these violations.

The NCACC’s own legislation leaves no room for discretion; the law states permits must be suspended, not may.

The MRN calls on the government to reassess its position and uphold its constitutional and international obligations.

We will continue to support the SALC’s efforts to ensure South Africa does not betray its proud history of opposing injustice and militarism.

The world is watching our nation’s commitment to human rights and international law.
