At least 11 people were killed in the Egyptian port city of Alexandria before dawn yesterday when a four-storey apartment block collapsed as families slept.

Eleven bodies were pulled from the rubble of the building where 35 people lived, and 10 people were injured.

The recovered bodies included a woman locked in an embrace with her baby; the search was still on going for more bodies.

The building collapsed at around 1:00 am as most residents were sleeping.

Saleh Subhi, an MP from the opposition Muslim Brotherhood who was at the scene, blamed municipal authorities for the accident.

He told AFP "The building was known to need renovation work".

Such incidents are relatively frequent in Egypt where building regulations are often flouted and additional floors are added without permission.

Last December, 35 people were killed when a 12-storey building collapsed, also in Alexandria.

In 2005, the collapse of a six-storey building in the Mediterranean port city killed 19 people. Three extra storeys had been added illegally.

Tougher legislation against construction companies which ignore the law was introduced in 1996 after a building in a Cairo residential area caved in, killing 64 people.

Does America possess a grand strategy or is President Obama’s challenge to manage US power without decreasing its size and without imposing undue costs on it?

Though it appears that there may well be a lack of strategic thinking, Stratfor Global Intelligence’s George Friedman warns that inaction should not be confused with a lack of strategy.

His document titled “Obama and the US Strategy of Buying Time” claims that despite pending decisions that Obama has to make on Iran, Afghanistan and Russia, work is in progress.

The Media Review Network expresses its disgust at the level of chutzpah displayed by the Israeli racist regime in the murder of a member of Hamas, Mahmoud al- Mabhouh in Dubai last month.

Israel’s irresponsible and dangerous act of stealing the British, Irish, French and German Jewish identities has exposed the lives of the innocent to high risk. In many botched Mossad operations in Paris, Nicosia, Athens, Beirut and Amman, using Canadian and other European fraudulent passports, innocent civilians were massacred.

Apartheid south africa’s intelligence services applied the same futile modus operandi when they killed or injured freedom fighters such as Ruth First, Albie Sachs and Frank Chikane.

The recent Carte Blanche expose’ that Mossad agents were operating at O R Tambo airport with diplomatic passports issued by the Israeli government, is of grave concern for the South African government and its citizens.

The Media Review Network has previously warned of self-styled “terror experts and agents” hatching sinister plots to promote the climate of fear in South Africa.

Stealing the identities and passports of ordinary civilians to cloak their despicable crimes for ominous agendas during the world cup is a real possibility.  South Africa needs to be alert to the dangers posed by plots manufactured by Mossad, masterfully incriminating the innocent for its evil deeds.

What is President Barack Obama, Rahm Emmanuel and his brother Zeke Emanuel up to in Africa and South Africa? When people in the United States elected Barack Obama their President, it symbolised historic change in the US and elsewhere. The most important global expectations placed on the Obama administration included starting to mend the imperial legacy of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney and to help save lives. Obama inherited a destroyed local and global economy, an environmental crisis, the deepest social inequalities in US society, the largest recorded budget deficit, global disgust and fear based on the Bush wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He cannot fix these in a day or a decade.

These wars were not simply neo-conservative over-reach that destroyed the US image abroad; increased its public debt to hasten the collapse of banks; lined the pockets of the Bush-Cheney war and oil companies; undermined international law; they were all these and more. The Bush Wars attacked the most fundamental right of all — the right to a dignified life. Foremost among its victims are the countless households in Iraq and Afghanistan that were destroyed through bullets, disease, sectarian strife, bombs, torture, imprisonment and neglect. He also blighted the lives of US soldiers and their families.
