Did Al-Zeidi think only of Bush ?

Reem Al-Faisal I Arab News

No matter how many times the scene is played on TV channels or Internet sites, one simply can’t get enough of it. Every time I see Muntadar Al-Zeidi throw the pair of shoes at US President George W. Bush, I feel I need to pinch myself so as to make sure I’m not hallucinating, but then I realize it really happened. An Arab journalist truly took his shoes off and threw them at the tyrant who was the cause of the death and misery of millions of Muslims. This man who dragged his nation into a mindless war and brought down on them the scorn and hatred for generations to come.

The most amazing thing to me is that there is still anyone left in the Arab world who has it in him to stand alone and defy tyranny in any one of its forms and I think that is what made Al-Zeidi’s actions produce such violent reactions in the Arab and Muslim world. His act spelled not only the bravery of individual action — for no one can deny his bravery — but it touched the much deeper wound which is the utter insignificance of the Arab states and the people they represent. We as a region have become invisible on the geopolitical map. If at all we are seen, it is as mere pawns in the hands of Western imperial powers and their desired dominance of other rising powers such as Russia or China.

World conscience on trial –

By Ahmed Yousef

For the past fifteen days the small area of 150 square miles jammed with one and a half million Palestinians has been subjected to the most brutal military campaign against a civilian population of this new 21st century, and ranks among the most heinous of the 20th.

There is absolutely no equivalence between the limited capabilities of the Palestinian fighters and the military might of Israel’s armed forces, equipped with the most sophisticated technologies, delivering death and destruction by air, land and sea.

“Affirmative Statement”

Traditionally, Hampshire College has advocated for the oppressed, taking unpopular stands when others have preferred to turn away. In 1977 Hampshire College was the first college in the US to divest from Apartheid South Africa. In 2001 Hampshire was the first college to object to the war in Afghanistan. In this spirit and in light of the fact that the Israeli occupation is the longest ongoing occupation since World War II, we state our objection to the oppression of the Palestinian people. The Hampshire community hereby declares its commitment to work towards the end of this occupation. Furthermore we call upon Israel to end its policies of discrimination and to respect international law and Palestinian rights, including the right to self-determination. We support the Palestinian right to resist the occupation in accordance with international law. Our commitment includes the following policies ratified by Hampshire College :

Israel and using “apartheid”

by Ben White

Talking about Israeli policies in terms of ‘apartheid’ is nothing new – you can find the claim going back at least 30 years. This kind of description for Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians became increasingly common through the 1980s and ’90s, until now, nine years since the Second Intifada began, ‘Israeli Apartheid Week’ is held in dozens of cities worldwide and numerous trade unions, faith groups and politicians use the term routinely.

Nevertheless, to consciously use the ‘apartheid’ framework in critiquing Israeli policies past and present, with the presumed analogy with South African history, is still considered by some to be inappropriate or even completely unacceptable.
