New Age report on al-Qaeda’s “SA links”

A report in the ‘New Age’ with a screaming headline “SA’s al-Qaeda links revealed” (May 3, 2011) is not only misleading, its also entirely speculative.

Quoting faceless South African and American intelligence sources, it makes utterly outrageous and unsubstantiated allegations such as this country being used as a springboard to infiltrate al-Qaeda-linked operatives into Europe, the UK and the US. It goes on to claim that the infiltration is run by a network of Pakistani citizens who bring in illegal aliens by air via OR Tambo airport or overland through Mozambique, Swaziland and Lesotho.

The report is mischievous, misleading and malicious for the rest of its content deals with a deliberate attempt to conflate criminal conduct with a movement widely viewed as an “Islamic terror group”.

Money laundering and forgery of documents along with human trafficking is criminal!  Whilst we applaud the Hawks for busting many of these crime syndicates, we deplore New Age journalist De Wet Potgieter’s unprofessional and wholly unethical attempt to mix fact with fiction!

We also applaud the intense operations conducted by members of specialised undercover police units and the SA Revenue Services (SARS) for their efforts to uncover and prosecute criminal gangs. We do however believe that to conflate the illegal activities of thugs with the legitimate political aspirations of people opposed to US-backed dictators is a travesty.

Such trial-by-media as is evident by this devious report does a great deal of disservice to Muslims in SA, many of whom are equally appalled by the death and destruction caused by US meddling in the Middle East, Asia, Africa and its unconditional support for Israel’s repressive oppression of Palestinians.

We therefore challenge Potgieter to disclose whether any of these criminals have been charged and prosecuted in SA as terrorists under the existing anti-terror laws.

Affirmative statement

“Affirmative Statement”

Traditionally, Hampshire College has advocated for the oppressed, taking unpopular stands when others have preferred to turn away. In 1977 Hampshire College was the first college in the US to divest from Apartheid South Africa. In 2001 Hampshire was the first college to object to the war in Afghanistan. In this spirit and in light of the fact that the Israeli occupation is the longest ongoing occupation since World War II, we state our objection to the oppression of the Palestinian people. The Hampshire community hereby declares its commitment to work towards the end of this occupation. Furthermore we call upon Israel to end its policies of discrimination and to respect international law and Palestinian rights, including the right to self-determination. We support the Palestinian right to resist the occupation in accordance with international law. Our commitment includes the following policies ratified by Hampshire College :

Rice’s last and final visit to Israel/Palestine is conclusive proof that the neocons achieved nothing and could offer nothing, writes Khaled Amayreh in Ramallah

The 24th visit of US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to Palestine-Israel this week didn’t differ much from her previous visits, especially in substance. Rice, who held meetings with Israeli and Palestinian Authority (PA) officials, followed by joint press conferences in both West Jerusalem and Ramallah, essentially regurgitated the same platitudes and false promises she voiced ever since she assumed the top diplomatic post nearly four years ago.

Finding virtually nothing to clutch to in terms of hard achievements in the so- called peace process, Rice put a brave face on her apparent colossal failure to get Israel to end its decades-old occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip. She told PA President Mahmoud Abbas, who seemed to be coming to terms with the inanity of the process, that the near end of the Bush administration didn’t mean the end of prospects for peace. She added that she would brief the upcoming Obama administration on the status of Israeli-Palestinian talks so that the new administration wouldn’t have to start from scratch.
