Cancer rate in Fallujah worse than Hiroshima

The Iraqi city of Fallujah continues to suffer the ghastly consequences of a US military onslaught in late 2004.

According to the authors of a new study, “Cancer, Infant Mortality and Birth Sex-Ratio in Fallujah, Iraq 2005–2009,” the people of Fallujah are experiencing higher rates of cancer, leukemia, infant mortality, and sexual mutations than those recorded among survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the years after those Japanese cities were incinerated by US atomic bomb strikes in 1945.

The epidemiological study, published in the International Journal of Environmental Studies and Public Health (IJERPH), also finds the prevalence of these conditions in Fallujah to be many times greater than in nearby nations.

The assault on Fallujah, a city located 43 miles west of Baghdad, was one of the most horrific war crimes of our time. After the population resisted the US-led occupation of Iraq—a war of neo-colonial plunder launched on the basis of lies—Washington determined to make an example of the largely Sunni city. This is called “exemplary” or “collective” punishment and is, according to the laws of war, illegal.

South Africa skips Isarael conference

(source: VOC fm Online / Sapa)

Cosatu saluted the SA tourism ministry on Thursday for not attending a tourism conference to be hosted by Israel. “By its decision, South Africa now joins Britain, Spain and Turkey who have all refused to attend the conference,” Cosatu’s deputy international relations secretary Zanele Matebula said.

Matebula was referring to the 86th session of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) Tourism Committee conference to be hosted by Israel in Jerusalem. The conference is set to take place between October 20 and 22.

Cosatu said the Palestine Liberation Organisation had joined a call by radical Sunni Islamist group Fatah, Palestinian trade unions and civil society groups for countries not to attend, citing Israel’s “illegal occupation”, including that of Jerusalem. Cosatu was informed that neither Tourism Minister Marthinus Van Schalkwyk nor his deputy would be attending, Matebula said. The office of the director general of tourism has indicated, according to Cosatu, that no representative would be attending.

Tourism ministerial spokesperson Trevor Bloem confirmed to Sapa on Thursday night that the ministry would not attend the event for “logistical reasons”. “Since resources and time are limited we have for logistical reasons prioritised and choose to attend some conferences and not others.”

The minister and DG had just returned from a conference in South Korea. The department had recently been to another conference in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, also organised by the OECD. Matebula said: “The momentum for the boycott dramatically increased last week when Israeli Minister of Tourism, Stas Misezhnikov, said attendance at the conference would be ‘a seal of approval on the fact that we [Israel] have a state whose recognised capital is Jerusalem’.

“No member of the United Nations (nor the organisation itself) recognises Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Even the United States, Israel’s unwavering ally, refuses to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.”

Matebula said the comment by the Israeli tourism minister angered the OECD. However, by holding the conference in the city, the OECD ignored the fact that Jerusalem was under occupation. Matebula said taking part in the conference would be a “tacit acceptance” of Israel’s “illegal annexation” of the city.

Our defense industry the great untouchable

By Eric Peters

The (not “our”) government says it is broke; that it must cut back on essential services to citizens, including police and fire protection – and raise taxes. It is threatening/hinting that it will require average people to “sacrifice” in the form of decreased Social Security benefits (or higher retirement ages) and even that private pensions and 401ks will be subsumed into some form of “government annuity” – meaning, they take your property and in return you get a “chit” that entitles you (for as long as the government wishes to allow you to be entitled) to a fixed dole payment at some indeterminate point in the future…

Meanwhile, there is apparently plenty of money available to rebuild mosques in Egypt, to finance the Israeli military, to prop up our puppets in various countries… and of course, to fund a massive “defense” industry that consumes more resources than the entire GDPs of many Western European countries and is by itself – and by far – the single greatest consumer of U.S. GDP.

If it were “our” government, not one thin dime would be going to anything extraneous – that wasn’t a legitimate crucial element of our national defense, say. And all we need for that is our nuclear deterrent. We don’t need a single aircraft carrier; no million-man army, no fleet of billion-dollar-a-piece “stealth” aircraft. Just one nuclear submarine loaded with 20 ICBMs is sufficient, all by itself, to lay waste to most of the world and to utterly destroy any single country that attacked us.
