Islamophobic Murder Trial: Accused Sentenced

The Media Review Network (MRN) notes with relief that  the murder trial, in South Africa’s first Islamophobic  attack has been successfully  concluded.

The trial of Rudolph Viviers, accused for the murder of Fayaaz Kazi and the attack on his friend, Ansaar Mahmood, with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm was heard this morning at the Palm Ridge High Court.

Viviers, was charged on two counts, grievous bodily harm and culpable homicide. He pleaded guilty on both counts. On the former charge he was sentenced to 4 years imprisonment of which two years were suspended and on the latter charge he was sentenced to 12 years of which 4 years were suspended. The sentences will run concurrently.  Effectively, he will spend 8 years behind bars.

Following sentencing , Viviers’ legal representative, indicated that he, Viviers, wanted to address the  families of the Late Fayaaz Kazi and his friend, Ansaar Mahmood.  Speaking from the dock,he expressed his deep sorrow and repentance for the pain he had caused not only the families, but the Muslim Community at large.

The MRN, on behalf of both the families, express our sincere appreciation for the support of the Muslim Community and the Muslim Lawyers Association (MLA). The MLA was represented by Attorneys Yusha Tayob and Nadeem Mohamed.

The MRN also expresses its admiration  and thanks to the South African Police Services (SAPS), for the rapid deployment of a special task team, which was responsible for the swift arrest, prosecution and conviction of the accused.
